"Can't Buy Me Love" is a 1987 teen romantic comedy film
directed by Steve Rash and starring Patrick Dempsey as Ronald Miller, a high school
student who makes a deal with popular cheerleader Cindy Mancini (Amanda
Peterson) to pretend to be her boyfriend in exchange for money. The film is
loosely based on the Shakespeare play "The Taming of the Shrew" and
takes its title from the 1964 Beatles song of the same name.
In the movie, Ronald is a
socially awkward outcast who is desperate to become popular and win the
affections of his crush, popular girl Beth (Courtney Gains). He approaches
Cindy with a proposition: if she pays him to pretend to be her boyfriend, he
can use the money to buy new clothes and improve his social standing. Cindy
agrees, and the two embark on a tumultuous "relationship" that
involves a series of comical misunderstandings and mishaps.
As the film progresses, Ronald
and Cindy's fake relationship begins to have a real impact on their lives and
the lives of those around them. Ronald becomes more confident and popular as a
result of his association with Cindy, while Cindy begins to question her own
motivations and desires. Ultimately, the two realize that they have genuine
feelings for each other and decide to give their relationship a chance for real.
"Can't Buy Me Love"
was a popular film upon its release and has since gained a cult following for
its relatable portrayal of the struggles and joys of high school romance. It is
also remembered for its memorable soundtrack, which includes the title song as
well as other popular hits from the 1980s.
