Song for the disillusioned who found love...
(Note: The words in green font is a link to the Daylight Listening Party Video.)
Another Milestone: Happy 1M Spotify streams to “With You” with Belle Mariano as singer and Majarlica (Angelica Tagadtad) as composer. It joins other Belle Mariano songs to hit the mark namely “Sigurado” both Belle’s solo version and the duet with Donny, “Tanging Dahilan,” and “For Your Eyes Only.”
“With You” is
not as talked about as Sigurado, Tanging Dahilan, “FYEO” or “Rise” It does not
seem to be much of a favorite, but glad that it reached this milestone last
July 9, 2022.
The Message of the Song: The song goes beyond saying that everything
will be okay if your loved one is beside you. Let us try to talk about this nice
song that Belle Mariano brings to life with her astounding vocals.
The first
few lines introduce us to its jaded persona. She is used to having a song in
her head and is a fantasy believer. For some reason, these slowly slips away.
She does not notice that she is becoming someone else she could not recognize.
Stuff might have happened that she ended up not believing in happy endings,
magic, love, and everything else in between.
Despite
being unable to see the bright side of life, she simply is not looking for
someone to show up with a torch to guide her to the end of the tunnel. She was
fine trodding along in her life. She was not even looking for love.
The chorus
opens with the persona talking directly to someone who breaks down the walls around
her. The guy slowly destroys the bricks one by one without any effort, without
any resistance from the persona. The guy is the game changer who makes her take
a risk without overthinking. He makes her throw caution to the wind. As a
result of opening up to the guy, she becomes happier and nights are better.
Remarkable points:
Anti-Romance: The song is not overtly romantic. No mention
of the word “love” here. The persona did not say “I Love you” or “Thank you for
loving me.” Instead, it tells you about the change in her and the effect of the
person in her life. Not even “only one” is found in the lyrics. Instead, it
gave us clear imagery to show love and being each other’s only one.
What love can do: Love
can change you and your perspective in life. It makes you believe in things you
don’t or have already forgotten.
Love Finds You: People often try to look for love. Some wise
people say love finds you, and you only need to be ready for it.
Realities of love: “With You” is not your typical kilig song. It shows
you how it can be a mixture of roller coaster emotions. Sometimes, it rains;
and there will also be sunshine. What matters is that the person will be there
just by your side.
You Complete Me: As the composer, Majarlica, mentioned in the
Daylight Listening Party (at 28:50), the song is quite personal for her as it
is a product of self-reflection about what she wants in life especially in
terms of relationships. She mentions that perfection is not something one can
be at, but at least, there is security in knowing that she is fine on her own,
and she wants someone who is the same. No need to complete each other. The song
goes against the myth that you need someone to fill up what is missing in your
life. You cannot look for what you do not have and expect it to be filled by
your partner. That is not how it should work. You don’t try to measure up the
person, and what he can bring in your life. This is a good lesson from the song
that we should remember when getting into a relationship. When asked what song
does Belle recommend to those who are “feeling sad or feeling the need for
someone, she mentions “With You” because of the lines: “With you I am a little
less lonely tonight” (at 1:14:58 of the listening party)
“With You” may not be your typical swoon fest
song, but it does talk about some realities of love that we can all apply in
life. Here is how to find them in YouTube:
